Marshall | town and county seat, S Madison County on French Broad River. Authorized to be est. 1852; site still in dispute, 1855. Inc. 1863 and named for John Marshall (1755-1835), chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. Alt. 1,650. Post office est. there 1857, before the establishment of the county seat, was named Lapland. For a period before Marshall was laid, Jewel Hill (or Duel Hill), at present-day Walnut, was the seat of government. County court was held at Jewel Hill as late as the fall of 1859. |
