Rama and Sita get Sita's parents' blessing for their marriage (Thai Ramayana mural)

Rama and Sita ask for her parents’ consent to marry in this detail image on a Ramayana mural at the Emerald Buddha Temple. Rama and Sita sit together on a low cushioned platform with their hands in the respectful wai or Thai prayer position. They are both dressed in gold with tall Siamese-style crowns. Rama is painted with his characteristic green skin.

Above them to the left is Sita’s father, the king, who sits cross-legged on an elevated veranda and indicates his blessing for their marriage by holding out his left hand, which is bent back at the wrist. Sita’s mother participates by leaning out a low palace window directly behind her husband. Two female ladies-in-waiting creep along the tile floor just behind Sita and Rama.
