PlaceDescription
Jeffersona proposed town in what is now SW Cleveland County. A 1799 law, slightly changed in 1800, authorized the establishment of a town in S Rutherford County between the Broad River and South Carolina. A building for a warehouse and for the inspection of tobacco was to be erected there. Commissioners were authorized to purchase 50 acres of land and to lay out the town. As late as July 1803, the county court appointed a successor commissioner, but all plans for the town appear to have been abandoned when it was decided that the river could not be made navigable.
